SECOND HAMONGOG

LONE PEAK MOUNTAIN

Resting above the foothills of Alpine, Lone Peak Mountain offers an incredible range of beautiful meadows, thick forests, and crystal clear mountain streams. Although Lone Peak offers routes from both Draper and Alpine, this article covers the trail on the south side of the mountain beginning at the trailhead in Alpine city.

The trailhead begins about a mile from the base of the mountain and follows a dirt road that eventually meanders into steep switchbacks up the mountainside. After a grueling 90 minute climb the dirt road will eventually end at the 1st Hammongog; a beautiful meadow teeming with insects and wildlife. The trail from here is significantly less steep, however, still a challenge for unexperienced hikers. Taking the left trail at the fork of the 1st hammongog will lead through thick forest tunnels and overgrown brush. The entire trail itself offers incredible views of the valley and emerald green plantlife in every direction.

The crest of the 2nd Hammongog can be viewed from the 1st Hammongog, marked by thick pine trees surrounding the meadow. After about another 90 minute hike up the mountainside, you will find your self summiting the peak of the meadow, and then a short walk downhill into the the 2nd Hammongog.

The 2nd Hammongog is similar to the 1st, in that it entails another mountain meadow but with an incredible view of Lone Peak's rocky summit. The 2nd Hammongog provides perfect campsites for a quick overnighter and picturesque mountain streams to cool off sore feet. If you decide to stay the night, get ready for incredible views of the the starry night sky.

OTHER INFO & SUGGESTIONS

  • You can park at the trailhead on the road or there is parking up by the water tower next to the gate, however, there is a slim chance you may get a ticket by the water tower, so don't get mad if you do.

  • Take advantage of the mountain streams and bring a water filter to lighten your load

  • This hike can also be used as a quick day hike and generally is much easier without an overnight pack.
